View Full Version : I'm really sad about this...

I hate to post a sad thread after just making the "positive" thread, but I'm really pretty upset and I wanted to tell you about it. Today, Brendon woke up with a small rash on his arm. It was weird, but nothing we thought we should worry about. Well, around 3 he came home from class and the rash had spread from just a small place on his arm to completely covering both of his arms and most of his stomach. Poor guy was itching like crazy! Well, we immediately took him to the clinic on campus to get it checked out because we had been at Mom's house just last night and we were scared to death it might be contagious. We didn't want Mom to come in contact with anything that might hurt her during the chemo since it can be very dangerous for her to get any kind of infection or illness. After being seen by practically every nurse and nurse practitioner at the clinic they decided that they "THINK" it's an allergic reaction. To what, they have absolutely no idea. They also said it could be a viral infection, but that it's not as likely since he has no other symptoms (sore throat, temperature, the usual stuff that accompanies a virus). But since it's a possibility, neither Brendon and I can see Mom until it's cleared up and been gone for a few days. We don't want to risk making her sick. I hate not being able to see her, especially now when she's going through so much. I want to be there for her... :(

Those rashes being either viral or allergic make sense to me. Are you using any dryer sheets for softening?

I'm sorry to hear this Angie, i know it's hard for you not to be able to see your mom now, but heads up girl, you can phone her always, and if you miss her badly, and want to see her, there are these wonderful things called webcams ;)
Keep us posted, it does sound like an allergie, but better be safe, and do what they said, and if in any doubt, go see a doctor.

Oh Angie, how awful for you not to be able to be with your Mom, but it is the safest thing to do. There is always the phone so at least you can talk, but you don't want to take any chances until this rash is gone.
Did they give him anything for this rash? Has he been working in the yard any? I know a few years ago I was working around our yard and some 'weeds' were starting to grow up the foundation of our garage, well I pulled them down and went about my work. Good thing I had long sleeves and gloves on...I ended up with poisen oak on both wrists and I was miserable.
I sure hope they gave him something for the itching. Get better Brendon.

Thanks ladies. The rash went away right after he took the medicine, but we're keeping our distance for a few more days just to be on the safe side. As for what may have caused that kind of allergic reaction, we have no idea! We spent over an hour at the clinic going over what it might have been. They asked every question imaginable and he's not come in contact with anything new in the past few days, no outside work, no new clothes, no new food, no new dryer sheets or hygiene products...it's a mystery!
The medication makes him "euphoric" though which is quite funny. He laughs constantly for about 30 minutes before he gets back to normal.

Glad it's all clearing up phew! It's strange the affect meds can have on people, but hes happy, and laughing, so all is good ;)

We are pretty lucky. The doctor said it would either make him VERY VERY happy or VERY VERY depressed. I'd prefer the euphoria any day! He was laughing so much that me and our friends just couldn't help but laugh with (at) him as well. It was the funniest thing--four adults sitting around a table just laughing hysterically for no reason at all! :yelrotflmao: We did eventually finish our card game, after Brendon finally calmed down. lol

LOL, I would, but the pharmacist said it's very important to take ALL of the pills because it has to be tapered off (ie he started out with five pills/day and be the end he'll only have one).
Besides, it made him depressed rather than euphoric today, and you don't want that!
I guess you'll have to find something else to give you that "happy" feeling. lol. Maybe a margarita? ;) :D
Oh Angie,
I missed all of this. I'm so sorry you can't see Mom for a few days. That must be upsetting.
How's Brendon now? I hope his rash goes the way it came. Is he depressed or euphoric? What strange medicine! Sounds like Alice Through the Looking Glass.
Tell him I hope he feels better!

He says thanks Judy! :) He's actually feeling fine right now. The medicine only seems to effect him for about 30 minutes once it gets into his system and he took it this morning, so he's doing great. I'll let you know tomorrow whether it makes him happy or sad. Wonder if it has to do with your mood when you take it? Yesterday, we were hanging out with friends and having a great time and that's when he was euphoric, and today, he was in class when it started to affect him and he became depressed...

LOL! He'd hate to be normal, wouldn't he?
Normal=boring! It's a scientific fact.

If we were normal, life might be easier but it sure would be dull as dishwater! Be eccentric! It's the only way to go!

Angie, I'm glad to hear that Brendon's feeling better and I'm glad that you're being cautious around your Mom. It's always better to be safe than sorry and at this time you need to be overly careful. Rashes are no fun! I'm like Janet in the fact that I've had poison ivy. Talk about miserable!!!! I did that twice! All over my arms once and all over my legs once! AND they were both in the heat of summer which makes it worse!!! Anyway, I'm glad that Brendon's didn't last very long! That's pretty funny about the medicine!!! It's hard not to laugh when someone else is laughing! I'd take that any day over the depression!!!

He's doing much better now! No rash, no symptoms, nothing! So I think it's safe to see Mom now. Bren's almost done with his medication and now that he's down to smaller doses, it isn't affecting him quite as much as it did before. I have to admit, I really enjoyed those euphoric times though! LOL
Angie, are any of your laundry or other products "Improved"? That can mean you suddenly become allergic to something you've used to years because they added some new thing to the recipe. I too and relieved he's feeling better!

I use All Free which has been safe for all of us and quite a few of our friends. No drier sheets - even the unscented are linked to cancer. We use fabric "dryer sheets" for static that we get from National Allergy Supply, a great company. I use an unscented oxy booster that I get in the organic section of the supermarket for the dogs blankets and other smelly things.

Mom got to see all of her kids except Randy tonight as well as her grandkids. It made her happy! She didn't go out trick-or-treating, but at least she got to see them in their costumes. :)
Glad to hear that Brenden is feeling better, and that you can go see mom..

She is feeling pretty bad today, but not as bad as with the last treatment I don't think. She thought she was doing better with the nausea this time around and so she was eating anything she wanted. Well, she had a peanut butter and banana sandwich and it made her really sick. :(
I'm going over there in a bit so I'll be able to give a better update later tonight.

Angie, can the doctor tell your mom which foods will help against nausea?

I am really doing a lot better now. The new medications kept the nausea to just being really Queasy. Since i wasn't vomiting I didn't get dehydrated like last time.
I was really weak this time but they have told me that happens more with each treatment. It takes me a week to get over them so I am lots better now.
