I received an e-mail on this movie that is coming out with Nicole Kidman. I think that this is a movie to be concerned about. I have also included a link to snopes.com about it.
You may already know about this, but I just learned about a kids movie coming out in December starring Nicole Kidman. I believe it's called The Golden Compass, and while it will be a watered down version, it is based on a series of children's books about killing God (It is the anti-Narnia). Please follow this link, and then pass it on. From what I understand, the hope is to get a lot of kids to see the movie - which won't seem too bad - and then get the parents to buy the books for their kids for Christmas. The quotes from the author sum it all up. I'm going to tell everyone about this movie. I hope it totally bombs because we were all paying attention!

Diana, that IS creepy. I would hate to have UN knowingly bought that for a child for Christmas! I've passed it on to a friend who works on a parenting site so she can share it there. People need to know so they can make an informed choice.
Thanks for the heads up!

My son and I read the first book and thought it was interesting so got the others and were extremely disappointed and dismayed. And that wasn't even on religious values but on human values and what kids should be exposed to and how depressing the books were. So the thought of a movie based on these - no way unless they change it drastically.

I'm glad that someone has knowledge of these books and agrees that they are NOT for children. Thanks Kate!

I believe that children have fragile minds that are influenced strongly by what they read, hear and see, don't you? For example, I have had a cub scout who at age 7 was reading books written for adults that were violent, without an adult discussing the books with the child. No guidance. His play with legos and balloons became violent and scary.
The books have become popular with teens and I did let my son read them in his teen years but not before we discussed the issues the books raise and the level of personal violence in them. They are a fantasy series which makes people think "kids" I suppose, but that genre can have a lot of violence, racism, fascism - it all bears discussion and an informed adult reading along with a young person.

Yes, thanks Diana. It's always good to be able to get the word about certain subjects.

I'm just bringing this up again as a reminder. The movie comes out today, I think.
Let's see what the reviews say. It does look unpleasant in the commercials.

I hope the reviews reveal what it really is like. I get so sick when I think of the children realizing it before the adults do.

I've spoken with a few folks about this movie, and the books. From what I've heard, strictly just heresay, the books are anti-Christian. However, the movie makers were savy enough to know that mainstream America family values folks would not support a movie true to the books, so almost all of the anti-Christian parts have been omitted. What is left is supposed to be an entertaining fantasy movie. There are a couple of scenes that I've heard may be anti-Catholic somehow, but I really don't know since I've only heard bits and pieces.
I'm sure we will hear more as people start actually seeing the movie.
I went to Snopes to check it out. I would avoid the books and the movie. I think it's just strange that the books won prizes and they made the movie.
