View Full Version : I want to give up!!!

No, I won't really give up, but I've been searching for HOURS for a journal article to use for a family intervention method. I'm just trying to find a specific intervention for a married couple having issues with communication and trust. All of the articles are much more specific and complicated so I can't find what will work for my paper! *AHHH* Okay, that felt better. :D
You'd think it would be easy but apparently no one writes about the basic stuff. No matter what kind of search terms I use, or which databases I use, I still get stuff like "The effect of therapist-client racial similarity on client satisfaction and therapist evaluation of treatment" or "Evaluation of a structured psychoeducational intervention with couples: the dyadic relationships test (DRT)." That is NOT at all helpful. I'm becoming quite frustrated. :(
On the bright side, I did find one intervention called Relationship Enhancement Couples Group Therapy. If only I could find another I could be done with my paper in as little as half an hour...

Best of luck with your paper - I remember from when I was in grad school how frustrating research can be.

Thanks guys. If I could only find the right article I'd be done in no time. That's what's so frustrating.
Thanks for letting me take a break and vent. What would I do without you!?!

Good luck finding the article you need. I remember having similiar frustrations while writing papers--such a pain. The information has got to be out there somewhere; almost everything on the planet has been written about by now.

Thanks so much for the articles Michelle. For my paper they have to be from professional journals, but I will definitely read a few of those anyway. :)

Probably. They are through my school website. I got fed up and started using Google Scholar at one point and even that was fruitless. Guess I'll be spending another night scouring articles... what fun!

I have a social work research class next semester--my LAST required class before field. The rest of my class load should be pretty fun and easy though. I'm taking advanced photojournalism and a few other Mass Comm courses. If I ever want to get a second degree it'll take only two semesters because all of my electives have been in Mass Comm/Journalism. I did that since the burnout rate is so high with social workers. It's nice to have something to fall back on if I need to.
How is your legal research class going for you? How long do you have till graduation? By the way, you're in grad school, right? What kind of lawyer do you want to be? I'm just full of questions! LOL

Thank Janet! I ended up going to bed with a headache last night so a good night's sleep was my break. :) It's due tomorrow and this silly little article is all I have left to do...

My class is going well it wasn't too hard... it was mostly learning about the resources that are out there... now the second half of the class is trial advocacy, hence the mock trial case from the vent the other night... I'm graduating hopefully next year with a degree in legal studies and possibly a major in music... i have a lot of music credits but haven't decided if i'm going to finish the major, or just walk out with the minor, which i already have enough credits for... and no i'm still in undergrad, i'm only 21... and finally i don't know what kind of law i want to practice but i'm almost certain that it's not gonna be criminal law... i'd like to do something wiht international law, maybe diplomacy or something, but i'll have to start off in private practice anyway...so maybe labor or corporate... who knows! lol :)

That's awesome. Sounds like you'll have an exciting life. :) We'll graduate around the same time I think. We'll have to have a 4wt party to celebrate! LOL
Did you finish your mock trial? If so, how did you do?

it's not over yet, i have to present my direct and cross exams and my closing statement, i have my direct and cross already turned in and have my closing left to do... it's due on monday... it's not really like a trial setting, we just have to present each part as if it were... and then our prof. critiques what we have... i'm not as frustrated any more, and i think i'll do much better on closing than i did on the opening...

Me too! I have next semester which is mostly electives (12-15 credit hours, my lightest load yet!) and then field placement which means I work 36 hours per work and have a 3 hour seminar course to talk about issues in the field. I get 16 credits for this. No pay unfortunately. lol
After that, it's off to grad school. I just found out a few days ago that I can go for free! :D I was ecstatic!
I'm glad to have someone to celebrate the upcoming academic milestones with. :) Now you can't go off to law school and get too busy for us, got it! hehe

Through a GA program. It pays all of tuition plus about $670/month...that's what I've been told anyway. I have to look into more thoroughly, but I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it's true! Also, I'm going into an advanced standing program, so I'll be done in one year! It's tough, but for me it's worth it to graduate a year early.
You should look into your grad program and see if they pay GA tuition. Just make sure you work for a good professor. I've been told some are slave-drivers and others are awesome.

No problem. I didn't even know about it myself until I talked to a secretary a few days ago. She randomly brought it up when I said I didn't know if I'd be able to pay for grad school. I always knew GA's existed (been taught by a few of them), but I never knew they got tuition paid for and a little extra for living expenses. That's a really great deal!

Aww, that makes me happy! Glad I was able to help. :) You could also apply for scholarships on top of that and maybe get even more money to live off of. That's how I'm able to go through my undergrad without working. I have a few grants and several scholarships. It's really nice to be able to focus completely on school and not have the stress of a job on top of it.
Wow, you have so many exciting things to look forward to! :)

Did I hear party?
That's an interesting life you have set yourself up for Nicole! Good for you.
We need intelligent, good young people like you two (and Brendon, of course) to run this crazy planet. Lindsey - you too!
I taught in grad school and got a fellowship. I really loved it, and once college teaching is on your resume, you can teach in any college. Is that kind of thing still available?

I understand completely! I feel like I've been here forever too, and then in other ways it feels like it's gone by so quickly. I'll be happy and sad on graduation day, but I have a lot to look forward to. We both do. :)
