I'm saving some room for summer squash - gotta find the bush type rather than the vine type of summer squash.

Gayle,
OMG, I am so jealous... You're garden is awesome.
I can't even think about starting mine until May, because of the weather here in the Midwest.
Thank you for sharing these great pictures.....:)

Ha Ha! You might not say that when everything DIES in my garden - hopefully that won't happen! LOL!

The thing is when you are planting your gardens up north, it will already be in the 90's here, and everything will be wilting....... We have to get ours in early, so that we have some produce by the first/middle of July, after that it is just too hot for the plants to produce any fruit.

I can't imagine putting in a garden this early!! We can put in some cool weather plants but I was never into starting this early.

Your garden looks so nice!! I think that the squash that you're looking for is called yellow crookneck. It doesn't have a long vine but is rather bush like. It grows like zucchini.

Yep, that bushy squash is what I need! We have to put in our gardens early because of the heat in July/Aug - the plants just will not produce when it gets so hot here. We try to get it in early enough to get harvest in May/June and then we'll plant again in Sept. for a November harvest.

I found the bushy squash today. It is called straight neck squash and the vining one is called crook neck squash (at least that is what the labels said - it better be right!).

Today I planted the straight neck squash, dill, rosemary, oregano, and parsley.

How wonderful Gayle. Fresh veggies are so delicious. I would love to be able to just go pick what I wanted to eat. Good for you!

I didn't know that. I don't think that the crook neck squash has much of a vine though. It's what I used to plant. They both taste the same and that's what counts!!!! If you have a bumper crop you may have to mail some out to us!!!

I'm adding a couple more pix with a few more plants.

1. right behind the bright green tomato plant is rosemary, parsley, dill, and oregano (but you can't see the oregano). To the upper right of the bright green tomato is cilantro. Also, you can see how much the strawberries have grown. You can see some white blooms on the strawberries, and there are some REAL berries there too (but I don't think you can see them)

2. View from the strawberry end. To the upper right of the strawberries is all the herbs, and to the upper left is the cilantro. The far end is where the tomatoes are located.

It is supposed to get cold Wed/Thurs so I'll have to put buckets over the tomatoes to protect them!

Gayle, now I'm envious. Your garden looks great. I so want to grow some rosemary. It's so expensive in the produce section at HEB Plus. You should add some zuchinni. That and yellow straightneck are my favorite bushy squashes. You can do so much with them either alone or in combination. There's also another bushy squash that is very similiar to zuchinni only it has lighter and darker stripes and speckles. It's called Cocozelle. The seed are usually available in Ferry Morse displays. Actually, a couple of squash plants are all you need though or you will be giving it away to all your neighbors, just anonomously leaving it on their doorsteps to get rid of it.

So wish we had time to some gardening. I was going to try using pots, but simply have not had time to get it together yet this year. By the time I do, it will probably be too late. :(

Marilyn! Thanks so much for the squash recommendations. For some reason, I just don't care for zuchini - but I love yellow summer squash. I'm going to look for Cocozelle, I've never seen it. You gave me enough information to call around to see who has it. If I can find it, I'll set it out too and that will be enough - actually, like you said, probably too much. I put out two straight necked yellows, so I know that will be enough, but i'd like to try Cocozelle too, if I can find it. I have plenty of people to give it too.

Also, I ended up with 6 tomato plants - that's at least 2 too many - but again, if they are all successful, I'll have plenty of people to give fruit to.

Judy, you could probably get some flower boxes and plant a few veggies for you to pick. How cool would that be?
