View Full Version : How do I...

ask my old boss to be a reference on my resume? He wants me to go back and work for him SO BAD when I'm done school. I was careful not to say either way if I would or wouldn't while I was working there, because I knew I didn't want to.
Basically, the people I worked with were not easy to work with. It's tough to be a girl working in an engineering lab and in construction, and they made it no easier. I even CRIED at work because of how they were treating me. However, the company has trouble getting people to work for them (I knew nothing about them prior, just worked there for a school work term) so they won't fire who they have. The "higher-ups" like the manager and engineers were soooo nice and great, but everyone at the bottom just makes me not want to go back. There's a chance I would go back to them however, if there are no job opportunities in January when I want to start work.
I wrote an e-mail tonight, but didn't send it yet. I was hoping you guys could give me some feedback!

Hi Meryl,

I am updating my resume, and I was wondering if you would mind being a reference. I will definitely keep Clifton in mind for after graduation, but I am also interested in other aspects of the industry and would like to see what else is out there. If you agree to be a reference, could you reply with your contact information? Thanks for your time!

How's that? Any suggestions?

That sounds really good. If they really want you back they will do anything to get you. So go for asking for a reference and good luck at getting a great job. You can do it. It's out there for you.

I was impatient last night and I sent it :) I hope this turns out well, and I really hope I can find a job that's not THERE! There's another place I would LOVE to work for in the same city. My boyfriend's friend works there and gave me a lot of information, and said the people are so nice and they do a lot of fun social events. The sooner I get a reply from my old boss, the sooner I can apply for that job :D :D

I, too, think that your e-mail sounds sounds good. Don't get talked into going back to a job that you're not happy with.

My daughter is in a job that she loves doing, but the people that she works with make it very stressful. She won't quit and move on because they make her feel guilty about leaving. I've tried my best to get her to look for another job but she's an adult and has to make her own decisions.

Good luck with your application!!

No reply yet! I was so hopeful coming home for lunch, and then seeing 3 new e-mails! But none from him. Maybe he's sick today or not in the office. I'm too impatient!
