Hi Paula,
I was looking through some of my old hometown cook books from back in the 50's and 60's and I found a recipe for jam cake. It has the identical ingredients as the recipe you posted, but in lesser proportions. So, I feel sure this is probably close to your grandmother's recipe. My grandma made chow chow relish from green tomatoes and/or yellow squash. She didn't have a recipe, so while she could still make it, I had the sense to watch her do it and write down the ingredients and the amounts. I've made it and it tasted just like hers, but it is a pain to make so I've only done it a time or two! Those old time recipes are priceless!!! |
Gayle, I am so glad you found that. Why don't you post it? I for one would like to have it:) You are sooo right, these old time recipes are priceless. Your grandmas relish sounds delicious! Personally I think church cookbooks and hometown recipe books get about as close to our grandma's as it gets!

Thanks Gayle!! That with the caramel frosting:thumbup: BTW!! Mom made the other one in a bundt pan for the reunion today, it was YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!! So moist, my boys even ate it and they don't like jam:eek: It really was very good:D

I bet it was really good! Thanks for reporting back to us. I may make it for some event, I sure don't want to have the whole cake in my house - I would eat the whole thing!!!

Gayle, Mom's was delicious, but I think I am going to use your recipe and her frosting, reason being, yours doesn't use plain flour. Mom's does. Sometimes I screw up with plain flour and soda/baking powder, I don't know why, usually my cakes fall. Anyways let me know how your turns out:)
