Hope you don't get that nasty weather Gayle but I saw on the news earlier that you are supposed too........

We had flurries all day today and cold cold cold....it's 25 right now..supposed to get down to about 18 tonight and tomorrow 1-3 inches of snow.

gja1000 02-08-2011 07:37 PM

Our nasty weather is supposed to come tomorrow. Hope it comes early enough so they cancel our 10:00 meeting, otherwise, I'll be at school when the ice comes and trying to get home while avoiding the CRAZY DRIVERS who will be trying to HIT my car!

Blueyes 02-08-2011 07:54 PM

Our weather is supposed to be like yours tomorrow Gayle. I'm supposed to get my eyes checked but I'm sure I'll cancel.
My bedroom is on the front of the house and I have 3 huge windows that face the road. The last time we had ice/snow I opened the blinds, piled up in bed with the dogs, and watched people sliding up and down the road:p It doesn't take much to amuse me. I just watched it snow and told the cars "slow DOWN, you're going to slide right in to my house":yelrotflmao:

judy 02-09-2011 07:16 AM

I can't discuss the snow anymore!!! There seems to be no end! It's the ice that is dangerous.

Spring, please come soon!!!;););)

Janet 02-09-2011 10:44 AM

I'm with you Judy....I am so ready for spring. Our temps are suppose to be in the 40's this weekend and I sure hope a lot of it goes away. The roads are pretty clear now with just a few slick spots...highways are fine. I need more sunshine!

paula1961 02-09-2011 03:29 PM

It's snowing here right now. Winter weather advisory till 7 am. They are giving 1-3 inches but I doubt we get much. I'm with you girls...so ready for spring!

JJJ 02-09-2011 03:30 PM

Temperature is going down again :(

gja1000 02-09-2011 08:52 PM

It's supposed to get down to 19 tonight. Brrrrr! That's too cold for me! I know you all up north have to put up with lots colder weather - but down here we don't have the clothes or wherewithall to put up with such temps! :D

DianaB 02-10-2011 02:48 PM

Our temp was -10 this morning when I got up.....the good news is that it's suppose to get really warm for the next few days........so this beautiful snow is going to turn into ugly ol' slush.......:(

gja1000 02-10-2011 03:31 PM

How do you keep your pipes from freezing when it is so cold??

Janet 02-11-2011 05:49 PM

If you're lucky enough to have a heated basement or crawl space that helps, otherwise...we just leave the doors under the sinks open and let the water just trickle enough to keep it moving.

I'm so excited...even though it's in the 30's for awhile...by next Friday...it's suppose to get up to 57 degrees. If it does.....I will be soooooo happy. I'm so ready for the snow to be gone.

Gina 02-13-2011 11:20 AM

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaa we are having a heat wave!!!

gja1000 02-13-2011 06:59 PM

The weather was gorgeous today - 70 degrees! Yesterday I cleaned out all the old plants from the garden at the new house. They had some blackberry bushes - the thorny kind. Gary was so happy to have berry bushes but the thorns were driving me crazy so I took them out and promised to plant some thornless blackberries. Well today we went to the Tractor Supply store (to find farmer Acton some overalls LOL!) and lo and behold, they had some bare root thornless blackberry plants. So I got six and planted them. I guess it's a good thing I cleaned out the beds yesterday and the weather was perfect for cleaning and planting!

Janet 02-14-2011 04:27 PM

I wish it was planting weather here....you're so lucky.

lynne b 02-22-2011 02:37 PM

we had rain, sleet snow yesterday, i'm so tired of it all. went to bed around 9:30 shortly after the phone rang, it was the sherrif so hubby had to leave to sand some roads, about 12:30 his cell rang i assumed he had gotten home so i didn't get up, well then the home phone rang so i get up looking for hubby and he wasn't here he had forgotten his cell phone (which he never does) so i answer the phone it's the sherrif office looking for hubby so i tell them he is out but forgot his phone, so they get him on the cb radio. he got home just shortly after that.
I had noticed when i got up at 12:30 that there was a car in the neighbors drive way running, didn't think anything about it, well after hubby got home it was still there running, about 1AM i here loud music, it's coming from the car geezz!!! hubby had to get up at 3:30 am to go back to work wich means i have to get up early to take care of the dogs and get myself ready for work. This is the way it has been for the past couple of months, i am so tired of interupted sleep because of this weather. I need spring to get here fast.

gja1000 02-22-2011 06:15 PM

Oh Lynne, what a bummer. I didn't realize your hubby worked for the city, or county? I do understand that as I had some relatives growing up that did the same. Oh and I lived in Oklahoma where we had quite a bit of ice/snow every winter.

I'll be glad to give you some warm weather - it's been in the 80's for the past several days, had to run the AC in the house. Today was 65 where it is supposed to be this time of year - but it will be back in the 70's tomorrow and for the rest of the week. BLEH! I fear this means we are going to have an early and HOT summer. I hate the summer, just like you hate the winter; although I will say a hard winter is much more disruptive than a hot summer - so I guess I'll shut up now. :D

Janet 02-23-2011 10:35 AM

We had a two hour delay yesterday morning due to the ice. Man....I really really hate winter! Today is cold, but suppose to get into the 40's and then.....Thursday evening 1-3 inches of ice/snow by Friday morning. Yuk...Yuk...Yuk!!!! Probably end up with another 2 hour delay on Friday....we'll see.

Lindsey 02-23-2011 11:12 AM

It rained and snowed here yesterday... I think it was around -15 degrees C. When I went outside after work, the doors of my car were frozen shut! I was finally able to get in my passenger door and throw my weight against the drivers side to open it! It was pretty icy on the roads too and I narrowly avoided an accident (turning my wheel so I could slide BESIDE a truck instead of into it!) and making me have to take a big detour because of it!

On the bright side, I saw the sunrise this morning. It's not pitch black on the way to work anymore. That means spring is coming! The snow should be gone by May... we're almost there!

Lindsey 02-24-2011 08:13 AM

We're under a windchill warning today. Currently it's -32 degrees and snowing, with a windchill of -44 degrees (-47.2 F). I didn't even realize until I saw all my friends complaining on facebook about how cold it is! Wimps  lol! Maybe I was just in too much of a hurry this morning to feel it!

Janet 02-24-2011 03:44 PM

Looks like we're due to get 5-8 inches of snow and ice overnight. Blah!!!! Spring....please come soon....I think I'm going crazy!!!

gja1000 02-24-2011 05:41 PM

It was 85 here today. You all go ahead and complain about the snow/cold now and I'll complain about the heat in the summer!

Janet 02-25-2011 06:24 AM

I really don't like it too hot, but this snow and ice is beginning to get to me. Maybe a couple days of 85 degree weather would help me.. :)

Lindsey 02-25-2011 06:31 AM

Windchill warning again today! Right now the windchill is -49 C (-56.2 F) We'll be getting another 6ish inches of snow over the next week. I'm pretty jealous that my brother is in Jamaica right now and my parents leave for Mexico tomorrow :( The trip to Europe changed our plans this year, but next year I am not going through a whole winter here, that's for sure!

lynne b 02-25-2011 07:29 AM

Lindsey, I know we have complained about how cold it is here and all of the snow and ice but i girl i wouldn't wish what you have on anyone LOL. I just don't know how you stand all of that stuff.

And Gayle, i just don't know what to say to you, i would trade you place's in a heart beat LOL. i can handle the sweaty heat any day better than the cold.

Lindsey 02-25-2011 02:11 PM

Lol I would trade places with Gayle too!

Here's some pictures of my city in the past week, from the newpaper:
http://www.thestarphoenix.com/Photo+...837/story.html

The river is so beautiful when it fogs!

judy 02-27-2011 07:00 AM

The photos are great Linds! I don't know how you do it!

Gayle, I do feel for you. Humid heat sounds great when there is dirty snow and cold around us Northerners, but it really stinks when you're in it sweating and tired!

However, it is my honest opinion that SNOW SUCKS!!!

Janet 02-27-2011 10:32 AM

I so agree Judy. Snow SUCKS big time. I'm really tired of it and I'm ready for spring. The humidity does get to me, but as long as there is no snow...I'm ready. I just need to spend more time near the water.lolol

Lindsey the pictures are really nice....but....made me cold just looking at them.

DianaB 02-27-2011 06:18 PM

Lindsey, the snow pictures were awesome!! I loved the one with the fog coming off of the lake too!! I can't imagine having that much snow during the winter!!

I bought a child's hoosier cabinet off of e-bay about a month ago and every time I plan to go and get it the weather has been bad. I've joked about leaving it there until summer and plan on going up when we're dry and needing the rain!!! LOL

We've had snow and a two thunderstorms now.....with one of them being tonight. We were even in a tornado watch. I don't like it when it's that time of the year.......I'm looking forward to the warm weather though so I can plant some flowers in the yard. Right now we are so muddy from the rain and snow. I'll be glad when it dries up!!!!

gja1000 02-27-2011 06:29 PM

It was 84 here today and HUMID - just nasty! But, we are supposed to have a front tonight and get down to the low 40's and maybe only in the 60's tomorrow. I like 60's this time of year - NOT 80's.

I hope to plant my potatoes tomorrow - it was just too hectic to do it this weekend - but hopefully tomorrow will be quieter - probably not, but maybe I can get the potatoes in the ground~

DianaB 02-27-2011 07:03 PM

Around here the time to plant potatoes is March 17th. You must be about 3 weeks ahead of us. I'm ready to get out and work in the yard. I may try to put in a small garden or work at Dae Lynn's on one. I think that the economy is going to make a lot of people put out a garden.

judy 02-28-2011 07:10 AM

Gayle, how are you setting up your gardens in the new house? You really had it down in the last house. I'd love to see your set up now!

Janet 02-28-2011 09:59 AM

We had a good thunder and lightning storm last night with high winds. I love the thunder and lightning....especially the thunder. Wish it had been warmer though. I'm not sure, but I don't think spring is ever going to get here. I want it too bad I think....maybe if I hope it doesn't come soon....it will...LOL. I know....ya just can't fool Mother Nature.

DianaB 02-28-2011 12:20 PM

We had a thunderstorm last night too......but then the puddles had ice on them this morning!! I wish that Mother Nature would make up her mind......Winter or Spring!!!!!

I'll have to take some pix of the garden areas in the new house. There is one garden that looks just like my garden at the old house. It's a 4X10 raised box. It is at the back of the yard by some really big hedge row bushes and the are FULL of birds which we love but we will have to completely cover the garden in netting or the birds will eat everything.

The other garden area is butted up next to the house. It is a nice space and gets lots of good sunshine. That is where I have my blackberry bushes, and where I will plant my potatoes. Actually, it would be better to plant the potatoes out by the birds, wouldn't it. They couldn't eat the potatoes, would they! LOL! I think I may do that.

I'll also plant some green beans because there are trellis in the garden out by the bushes. I want to try squash too. I have not had much success at the old house with squash but I am told it is because I don't have enough bees to polinate the squash blooms. So I'm going to plant blooming flowers all around the squash plants. I think I will have more bees out in the country house.

LOL! I guess I got off track on the weather thread. Moderators don't be too hard on me!!

gja1000 02-28-2011 01:51 PM

So, to get back on topic, the cool front came through today and it is only 68 today. It feels cooler since there is a strong breeze. But there is lots of sunshine so it is a pretty day.

DianaB 02-28-2011 03:21 PM

I was wondering if you were still doing your raised garden. I'd plant the potatoes further from the house......I don't think that the birds would hurt it.

We used to plant potatoes under straw. You just work the ground......cut your potatoes like you usually do and let them dry for a day or two.......then place on TOP of the ground and cover with lots of hay.....make sure you keep them watered. Then when you're ready to get your potatoes just pull the hay back and they'll mostly be on top of the ground. I don't think that they get quite as big but it's so easy to do. You could try just a small area and try it.......we always ended up doing some of both.

Squash is easy to grow but you really need to watch for squash bugs. They can be horrible. I don't know if you use any spray or gardening powder but you'll want to start treating for them fairly quickly. You may want to ask some other gardeners down there to see if they're a problem.

I know that there are companion gardening techniques. Planting two different things together to help each other out......and I want to say that you plant marigolds with squash plants to keep away the squash bugs. Here's a list that I found of companion gardening. If you look wayyyy down the list you'll find marigolds but there are many, many others too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_companion_plants

gja1000 02-28-2011 05:48 PM

Someone sent me a link (not the one you sent) about companion gardening and yes, I think it was marigolds and zinnias to go with squash. It also said to NOT put potatoes and squash together. I was going to put them side by side, but guess I won't now.

judy 03-01-2011 06:07 AM

Spring is in the air!!! Planting threads are so wonderful to read at this time of the year.

I am afraid we will never get spring! The snow is so high, keeps icing up overnight, and is dirty! We don't have dirty snow in the mountains!!!

Florida for a month in the winter sounds nicer and nicer. Maybe next year.

:40::40::40::40:

Lindsey 03-01-2011 08:41 AM

Here we generally plant gardens on May long weekend (Victoria Day - around May 24th for Queen Victoria's birthday). Sometimes there is still frost in the ground and gardens don't get planted until June. I usuallly plant tomatoes in May in planters and bring them inside overnight so the frost doesn't get them! I don't know what I'll do this year because we leave for Europe on the 24th of May!

It looks like March has come in like a lion this year, and hopefully will go out like a lamb! It's -40 with windchill today. My brother just got back from Jamaica on Sunday so this must feel way worse to him! My parents are enjoying the sunshine in Mexico.

As for myself, I'm sick with a cold so I'm taking my second day off work. I had planned to go in but Scott called me from Vancouver last night and said I don't sound well enough and I might as well stay home and not spread my germs to everyone else. I feel like I'm letting everyone down so I did let the office know I'll work from home and have one request to work on already.

There was a pretty bad blizzard yesterday, and by noon, all of the highways leading out of the city were deemed too dangerous to travel on. There was zero visibility. I'm glad I was sick or I never would have made it home!

DianaB 03-01-2011 08:51 AM

Judy, I bet that you are tired of the snow. I don't blame you for thinking about going to Florida for awhile during the winter.

Lindsey, sorry that you're still not feeling well. It's possible that your body is just worn out from all of your work. Having stress and being tired are two things that can lower your body's resistance to colds and stuff. Get some much deserved rest and take care of yourself!!!
