Hi guys, I don't remember if I told you guys but I got three little chicks. We built them a coop. Let me know what you guys think or if I went over board :D

What a great chicken coop!! So many people are raising chickens these days, and fresh eggs are delicious:D YOU are a coop building ROCKSTAR!!

Janet 03-30-2012 06:17 PM

Well....I must say....those chicks are living better than me...lol. You did a great job on the coop...love the pink.

DianaB 03-31-2012 08:19 AM

Wow!!! I'm impressed!!! You're pretty handy!! Did you come up with that on your own or did you use plans? The chicks should be pretty happy in that!!

gja1000 03-31-2012 02:45 PM

Jessica, I LOVE your pink coop. You did such a great job on it. The chicks are so cute. Lots of people in Austin have a few chickens in the backyard. I'm really impressed with your coop!

JJJ 03-31-2012 06:19 PM

Guys don't give me credit I didn't do much but tell him what I wanted. My kids and the neighborhood kids helped with the painting.

No plans, his a handy man and was able to put things together.

I'm so glad you like my coop. I'm the only one in my neighborhood with chickens :D

Shada 04-01-2012 10:35 AM

Great job!!! Love the coop! Fresh eggs everyday.. little jealous here.. :)

My neighbors have a few chickens. "Had' a rooster that crowed very early in the mornings.. last few weeks haven't heard the crowing, so must have got rid of the rooster. Still have the chickens.

You are lucky to have a handyman. I could use one of those too! ;) Have a few projects going on this summer that I dread doing by myself.. but will get done..

I made sure not to get a rooster since I do live in the city. If it wasn't for my handyman I wouldn't have anything. I don't even know how to put a nail in the wall

Here's another one of our projects. I have been wanting a garden for a while now. Of course I'm clueless. I do have a space in between my garage and my front door where i can look through my kitchen window.

I brought blackberries, cantaloup, cucumbers, red and green bell peppers, onion, corns, hot peppers, jalapenos, regular tomatoes, purple tomatoes, grape tomatoes, spinach, apple mint, chocolate mint, 2 types of parsely, oregano, thyme, mexican terragano, cilantro, and I might be missing a couple more. I do want potatoes and carrots but there's no room. I'm going to wait till they all grow.

Here's to my first try in gardening. :)

gja1000 04-01-2012 07:33 PM

Wow! You'll have fun with the garden. With such a variety of things, you'll find out what grows well and what doesn't. Good luck!

Janet 04-02-2012 07:45 AM

What a cute garden...you'll have plenty of produce won't you? I really wish we could have another garden. Just don't know if I'm ready to do all the work...lol

DianaB 04-02-2012 08:18 AM

Nice little garden!! I've been trying to get Glen to make me a raised bed here close to the house. We have a huge garden but it's quite a ways from the house and not very convenient. I love just stepping out the door and picking a few things for supper!! Good luck with the chickens and garden!! Keep us posted on how they all do!!

We had a couple of roosters through the winter and they crowed ALL the time!! You could hear them in the middle of the night!! Plus they were mean!! When the last one disappeared Dae Lynn accused me of shooting it because it had been going after the kids and I was threatening to kill it.

JJJ 04-02-2012 09:05 AM

"When the last one disappeared Dae Lynn accused me of shooting it because it had been going after the kids and I was threatening to kill it. " :yelrotflmao:

That is too funny.

Only one of my chickens is scared of me (or any human). The others like to be petted.

I do hope my garden grows. If anything my herbs. I always buy herbs and they go bad after a few day's. I'm hoping with my garden I just pick what I need and the rest can keep growing.

gja1000 04-02-2012 07:17 PM

Jessica, herbs are the easiest to grow, you'll be giving them away they will grow so well. I've had great luck with rosemary, basil, thyme, and oregano. You can grow cilantro but only when the weather is cool, it won't grow in heat. In Houston you should be able to grow it almost all winter.

Lindsey 04-02-2012 08:20 PM

Love the coop!!!!

Oh thank you Gayle, that is great to know. I can't wait to put them to use :D

My garden has been growing so lovely I thought I share some pics.

DianaB 05-09-2012 08:03 AM

Your little garden is doing GREAT!! It looks like soon you're going to have green peppers, tomatoes, and squash!! Very nice!!

Janet 05-09-2012 08:32 AM

Your green thumb did good. What a great garden you have.

DianaB 05-09-2012 11:27 AM

I forgot to ask how the chickens are doing?

judy 05-09-2012 01:28 PM

The garden is really growing nice!!! You have a green thumb Jessica! How is the mint doing? And the chicks?

JJJ 05-11-2012 04:02 PM

Thank you ladies = )

One of my chicken is not doing so well. She looks sick :( I hope she starts looking better. My other two are doing great. I have be meaning to take pictures of them but I can't seem to get around to it. Maybe this weekend. No eggs yet.

Judy my apple mint is growing nicely but my chocolate mint is not growing as fast.

I can't wait to taste my veggies.

gja1000 05-11-2012 04:49 PM

Jessica, I'm so jealous! I have never bee able to grow decent bell peppers! I can grow jalapeņos, but not Bells! You garden looks fantastic!

judy 05-12-2012 07:56 AM

Chocolate mint will grow, but spearmint grows the best. I never tasted apple mint. It sounds good!

We had temps in the low 30's a couple of mornings ago, so I'm still not replanting my mint, or putting out my plants.

Thank you Gayle, I am so excited. I hope my bell keeps growing, it's so small right now. My red bell pepper tree died a few weeks ago. I was so sad.

Judy, I was just thinking maybe my boys are eating my chocolate mints and that's why it's slowly getting smaller. Would you happen to have recipes for mint?

DianaB 05-16-2012 06:19 AM

Jessica, your chickens probably won't start laying eggs until the end of the summer. That's what ours did last summer. It takes a while for them to get mature enough. I don't know how old they have to be.

We got some more chickens the other day......50 of them!! Glen has promised that he'll keep them in the chicken coop this year......after they destroyed my yard last year. We have one chicken and one duck left out of all of those we had last year!!! It's funny because they pal around together!!

Fifty chickens Diana  Wowser :D

There is no way I can fit 50 in my tiny backyard. I'm hoping that in five yrs I can relocate out of the city with more space and away from neighbors. I did read somewhere that they can start laying eggs as soon as 7 months and as late as 1 1/2 yrs. I read on the breeds I got and supposedly there good layers. I guess will see.

Gotta keep my Lil' Man away from my chickens

DianaB 05-18-2012 08:25 AM

The land that we live on is 59 acres so we have room for a lot, Jessica!! We were only suppose to have 50 chickens last year and Dae Lynn was suppose to have 50 as well but that was when Damon ended up in jail so we had all 100. Hopefully we've learned a thing or two since then!! Mostly to leave them in the pen instead of letting them out!! They destroyed my yard.......and that was when we only had 6 or so!! If Glen lets them out......I'm gonna' start shooting!!......and I'm NOT kidding!!!! LOL

I have to watch Jazzi and Reuger around our ONE loose chicken and duck. If I pay any attention to the birds then the dogs chase after them. I think that it's a jealousy thing!!

BTW.....we named the chicken, Henny Penny, but we haven't named the duck!! The hen is dark red like your second picture. She lays brown eggs.

JJJ 05-18-2012 09:38 PM

I love the name Henny Penny, that is so cute.

My boys name their chickens. One is Chicken Wings, the other is Hot Wings and my oldest didn't want to play along with them so he named his Elizabeth like my sis :p

I want a house with atleast one acres of land. One day :crossfingers:

judy 05-19-2012 07:19 AM

I just love your coop! The chicken going down the ramp is too cute!

paula1961 07-10-2012 09:32 AM

Love the coup Jess! The chicks are adorable. And your garden is cute too! Hope it does well. I'm sure it will.:)
