TV Shows......
I'm curious about what TV shows that all of you watch. My viewing has changed a lot lately because the movies on LMN and Lifetime are mostly reruns. I've really gotten into the Storage Wars and that type of programs. I have my DVR set to record most of them.
They also have some new ones......like Abandoned, Junk Gypsies, Toy Hunter, and America's Lost Treasures. They are all similiar in that they are looking at people's "stuff". Junk Gypsies transform things into other more usable things. It's very interesting! I've also been recording Rizzoli & Isles. It's pretty interesting to watch. Does anyone watch anythng that's good? |
Great topic Diana!!!
I watch Storage Wars, Pawn Stars, Auction Kings, American Pickers and of course all the Real Housewives. I also like Haunted Collector, Ghost Hunters and there is another one, but can't remember the name right now. Of course the only ones I watch faithfully are the Real Housewives, and then it just depends which I'm in the mood for with the other ones. Remember one I watch every Wednesday....Dallas. Also...only one daytime show I'm interested in and watch everyday is Days Of Our Lives. Sounds like I watch TV all the time doesn't it? LOL...but really, one hour during the day, Real Housewives on Sunday night and Monday night and the others I watch just before I fall asleep or on a boring Sunday afternoon. |
We watch Storage Wars, Shipping Wars, stuff like that whenever it is on. Oh and HGTV shows like House Hunters and Property Virgins. We don't record them though.
The ones we do record are Big Brother, Bachelor/Bachelorette/Bachelor Pad (haha even Scott watches these), and then the sitcoms: Mike and Molly, Happy Endings, Up All Night, Modern Family, The Middle, The Office, 30 Rock.... I can't think of any others right now. I am so excited for all of the sitcoms to come back this fall :) Lol Janet, it doesn't sound like YOU watch too much tv! :D I know this will change when we have a family, but right now we always watch tv while we eat. And since most of it is recorded, we can fast-forward through commercials and watch two shows during a meal lol. |
I lead a very boring life. I love Lucy in the Morning before work and the news. Colvert Affairs, Suits and Royal Pains. Can't wait for Greys to come back on this fall. Also Big Bang and NCIS. LOL
|
Lol! My TV viewing is very different from most of you. I mostly watch basketball and football when in season. Otherwise I watch Antiques Roadshow on Mondays. This summer I watched Bunheads which was an odd breezy little show. In the winter I watched the series, Game of Thrones and the Borgias.
There is a fabulous show on Masterpiece theater that will start the third season in January called Downton Abbey. It's set in the UK and is a story about British aristocracy and their servants. Fabulous show with parallel stories involving the servants and also the rich family who employs them. This summer I watched season 1 and 2 on Netflix. I think you can rent the first two seasons in Redbox. I can hardly wait for the third season to start. Otherwise,mI watch reruns of Friends (my fave show) and Reba. I also watch House Hunter and How It's Made sometimes. |
Reba is sooo funny!! I love her show but don't watch it much any more. And Glen likes to watch How It's Made.
Gayle, I've never heard of some of the shows you mentioned. Are you on Cable? It's funny because several of us like watching the same shows!! |
Mike watches the auction/pawn/storage shows, but I really don't. I record most of the shows I watch so I can skip commercials. The weekly shows I like are Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Blue Bloods (gotta love Tom Selleck!), Modern Family, and Dance Moms (I LOVE to see those little girls dance!) The daily shows I watch are House Hunters, HGTV, Say Yes to the Dress, Hoarders:p, Toddlers and Tiaras, etc. I just watch these shows at random since I have them recorded. They are absolute no-brainers, which I seem to need at this time in my life, lol! I had MUCH rather read!
|
I watch Hoarders sometimes too but it reminds me so much of my MIL. She had such a problem and it was so hard on the family. I can relate so much to what goes on.
I like Tom Selleck so I'm going to have to look for that show! I really like the Rizzoli & Isles! It's a detective show. Rizzoli is played by Angie Harmon and I think that she's a really good actress. I think that it's a new series. Betsi, I have a lot of my shows recorded too.....plus a LOT of cartoons for the kids!! It's so nice to be able to zip through the commercials!! |
I forgot Say Yes to the Dress, Randy to the Rescue, and what Not to Wear. I don't watch these regularly, but if I'm watching TV and they are on, I will watch them.
|
Oops I forgot, Diana yes I have cable. Game of Thrones is a series on HBO and The Borgias is on Showtime.
|
My viewing habits are a little different. I don't get to watch much, but when I'm home on Saturdays doing cleaning and laundry, I always try to have HGTV on. I skim watch House Hunters, House Hunters International and any other shows they broadcast. Love to see decorating ideas & inside other peoples homes, especially in exotic locations.
Regular shows when they are on... True Blood (this shocks some folks, but I like vampires and werewolves), The Newsroom both on HBO. Grimm on NBC, Big Bang Theory on CBS. I may watch Boardwalk Empire on HBO this season, not sure yet. Wasn't too keen on last season. That's about it. We have some kind of premium package on Direct TV, a huge TV with surround sound system and I barely know how to turn it all on. You have to turn on three things and have the correct source selected. If its already on and I just have to change the channel I'm okay. My family makes fun of my ignorance on this being an engineer they think I should catch on better. |
I go through spurts of watching HGTV. It seems like I'll start watching and then after a while I get tired of it. I enjoy the decorating and remodeling that they show. I sure wish my husband was handly with wood and a hammer!! It would make watchng the shows more interesting!!!
|
I like watching all the home improvement shows too. If I sat down and watched everything I liked whenever it was on.....I'd get little else done. I honestly don't watch that much, but if I'm in bed, I'll watch whatever is on before I fall asleep. There are only 5 that I try not to miss.
|
I'm really liking the Rizoli and Isles show!! I think that it's one of my favorites!!
There are also some new shows that I enjoy.....One is Abandoned where some guys go through abandoned businesses and pick things to resell......of course, they have permission. Another is Toy Collector about a guy who goes through other people's toys and then auctions them off. I enjoy any kind of show that has collectibles. |
I saw the Toy Collector once, but it didn't hold my attention much. I've not heard of Rizoli and Isles, what is that about? I haven't seen Abondoned either...what station is it on? Sounds like something interesting.
|
Rizzoli and Istles is about two girls.....one a police officer and the other a medical examiner. They're pretty much detective shows but it has a bit of humor in it.
I enjoy the Toy Collector because I love to collect things!! Abandoned is about a guy and his crew that go into abandoned buildings and get out things that they can sell or refurbish. It's interesting. One was an old church that was about to be demolished......another was an old cotton mill. |
Saw Abandoned the other night and it is good. I found another that I haven't seen for quite some time and it's just starting again...Breaking Amish about kids that reach a certain age and go out on their own to find out if they want to stay with the Amish community or go out on their own. It's really interesting to see and learn how they live. A bit of a hard life at times.
|
I've seen that one on but I haven't watched it.
|
I have been watching Breaking Amish too. There was a show years ago, I think it was called Amish in the City. It was sort of the same premise, but the Amish people lived in a big house with "regular" people as roommates, and at one point they took them back to see how the Amish lived as well. I find it really interesting! She don't have Amish here, but we have Hutterites who basically live the same way. We have bought a lot of meat and vegetables from them but don't really know much about how they live.
|
It is really interesting learning their beliefs and how they live. I saw a little bit of this show the last time it was on, but didn't get to watch it all. I think I remember the other one you've mentioned. There are so many unless you write them all down it's hard to remember from year to year or season to season what was one.
|
Real TV is back this week! Hurray!
I watch NCIS, NCIS Los Angeles, Criminal Minda, The Mentalist, CSI, The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and the Office. I DVR those, and DVR Dr. Phil and Anderson Live during the day. I love all of the shows you all mentioned, like Pawn Stars, and all the collectors and antique pickers. They are such fun! I love Hoarders, and on HGTV there is a show "Million Dollar Rooms" that makes me so happy! The extravagance is amazing! Then, there are my guilty pleasures, which consists of Investigation Discovery, etc. All these shows about murders, serial killers, and Who the **** Did I Marry? Give me a good serial killer, and I'm happy! I don't know why I enjoy these shows, but I find them fascinating. The crazier, the better. Go figure that one out! |
I watched Upstairs/Downstairs on PBS last night. The 1st season aired in 2010. They showed 3 episodes of season 1 last night and I think 3 episodes next Sunday night, proabaly until seasons 1 & 2 are aired. I think they must be rerunning seasons 1 and 2, getting ready for a new season 3 soon, although I'm not sure. It was good though. It is much like Downton Abbey - which is a fabulous PBS series on British aristocracy and their servants. I like Downton better, but Upstairs/Downstairs is good too.
There's a new PBS series that started last night, Call the Midwife. It was really good. It's about 4 midwives in London (I think it's London, maybe not) in the 1950's. I really liked it. I've also been watching Land Girls on PBS, and it is good, but I've missed some episodes, I need to get caught up. I have Hulu and can usually get caught up on some things that way. |
The Midwives sounds interesting! There is a book by Chris Bohjalian that is supposed to be really great called Midwives. I wonder if the TV show is similar.
http://www.amazon.com/Chris-Bohjalian/e/B001H9VY80 I watched 666 Park Avenue last night. It is really good...evil on Park Avenue! Linds, there is a show about the Hutterites on TV here. The girls do not seem to be so happy, I have to say. |
I read somewhere that the Hutterites were not happy with how the show was turning out.
I do have to say that we watch a LOT of Mickey Mouse!!!! Not my choice!!!! |
M i c....k e y....M..o..u..s..e...Micky Mouse!! You know...there are times I will admit, when I'm in one of my goofy moods cleaning or somthing and will start singing the Mickey Mouse Club song. Oh the memories!
|
I have been watching a PBS series called, Call the Midwife. It is REALLY good, no it's GREAT! Episode 2 was just spectacular. It comes on at 7:00PM central time on Sunday nights.
Upstairs Downstairs is starting season 2 or 3 (can't remember). This was a series in the 70's that was remade in 2010, so I guess this is now season 3. I saw part of season 1, but need to watch the rest of season 1 and then season 2. I'm watching season 3 now, I think it's on Monday nights, and it is really good. |
Daytime TV is pretty bad. I watch The View if I have time. I DVR Dr. Phil and Anderson Live. I cannot be bothered watching the news shows. I don't believe that most of what they have to say is not biased one way or the other with the election coming up. I catch CNN but I don't really believe them anymore. Actually, I read the top articles on the NY Times app on my Ipad to see what is going on in the world.
I love to lay on the couch and watch TV at night, with the dogs all cuddled around me. Lately, I have been enjoying reading more thn TV though. I love my kindle!!! |
We have DirecTV with sooo many channels but lately I've noticed that sooo many of them are selling stuff. I've looked for a way to block them but without going through each channel I don't think that it can be done. If you take them out then there's really not much to watch. I'm really getting tired of it.......plus with it being close to Halloween the shows are really scary and I don't enjoy being scared. I hate the movies that are out around this time. It's a good thing that I have some movies DVR'd or I'd be going crazy!!
Speaking of Dr. Phil.....which I don't hardly ever watch.......but I caught a program where there was a husband that was obsessed with his wife......calling her all the time.....always checking on her......and all other kinds of behavior. I guess that he was on a few weeks before and Dr. Phil sent him to counseling for 30 days. Anyway.....that man would scare me half to death if I were married to him!!! I sure hope that poor woman can get out of her marriage salely and live a happy life. I think that everyone was concerned about what this man could do. Scary! |
Diana, I hate scary movies too! I used to love them. I used to love scary books too. Now I just get scared too easily lol! In the last few years that I did still enjoy them, I started having some really bad realistic nightmares and I would wake up covered in sweat and crying. So I just stopped watching scary things all together. I think it would be even worse now living in our old house lol! There are a lot of creaks and random weird things that happen here so I don't want to put ideas in my head! It's easier to just ignore :)
I am loving all the sitcoms that are back on tv now :) I think we had about 10 shows recorded this week, because we were away last weekend. We had a relaxing night last night cuddled on the couch in front of the tv lol :D |
We have the dish network and have lots of channels too. I watch it more then regular TV. I mostly watch the local news out of Indianapolis and Days of Our Lives and then the ones I mentioned above on Satellite.
Okay so tell me more about this DVR stuff.....is it the same as VCR ? I have a VCR player/ recorder, a DVD player, but just what is this DVR and what exactly does it do differently? |
A DVR is the same as a VCR except there are no tapes. The recorded shows are just stored in the box and you just push a button to record them and then push a button to watch them. A DVR is in the dish box hooked up to the TV, but a box with a DVR usually costs a little more per month than a regular box.
|
We have just a regular receiver box, but Scott had an external hard drive laying around (because he's a nerd like that) and we found out if we hook that up to the box we already had, it would act as a DVR and it was recognized as one. The only difference is if we are recording something, we can only watch that show or something else that has already been recorded on the DVR. We can't watch live tv of another show while one is recording, and I think that would be possible if we would have shelled out the money for a DVR with the box.
|
Y'all, I'm just raving about Call the Midwife on PBS. The episode tonight was one of the most touching TV episodes I have ever seen. The portrayal of nurses on this show are just exactly what nurses SHOULD be. I absolutely love this series!
|
Sounds good. I wish that we got that channel.
Janet, we love our DVR!! It's like a VCR except it's so much easier to use! You can go to your channel guide and just push the record button and it will record for you. You can even go ahead several days and record stuff you might want to watch sometime. It will hold hours and hours of movies and shows. You can even set it to record a series of shows for you so you don't have to remember to program it every week. So easy!!! |
I am gonna have to check into this DVR. Can you get them at Wal Mart? I'm gonna google and see what I come up with.
|
Janet, I'm not sure how it works for you guys, but I think all of our cable/satellite companies here just sell the DVR as a part of a reciever. I don't think I have seen any that you can just add on later (except in our case with an external hard drive - you can check if that will work for the box you already have!). I could be wrong though!
We have ours set to record every NEW episode of each show we watch. So when they skip a week and just put a rerun of that show in the same timeslot, it won't record it. That's pretty neat I think! Last night we watched the movie, Catch Me If You Can. We recorded it back in May!!! It came on tv just as we were going to bed, and we had both never seen it before. So it's been sitting there for months and we finally got around to watching it! Oh, and with ours (I'd guess this would be with most) you can even rewind live tv. If you are watching something (not recorded), and step out of the room and miss some of it, or if someone starts talking in the middle of it (that's Scott in our house ) you can just hit rewind and watch what you missed. I think ours normally goes about 10 minutes back. |
A friend told me that it comes in the receiver. Since ours is an older one we'd have to get a newer one. She also told me there is a monthly charge. I don't think it's something I'd really want if I have a monthly charge.
|
Ours had a monthly charge too but they took it off for us. You just need to talk to them. I think that they had it free for new customers and we complained because we weren't NEW customers. It ended up that they sent us a new system that had the DVR. Just give them a call and check.
|
Hey everyone, tonight is the night for Call the Midwife. It comes on the channel that shows Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and all those kid shows everyday. Someone mentioned that they didn't get the PBS channel, but it is one of the channels you can pick up with just an antennae, you don't even need cable/satellite to get it, so I would think that everyone has it. I called it PBS which stands for Public Television Station, and it would have a different "call" name on your channel lineup. It's KLUR for me.
Anyway, if you have a guide on your TV, look for it at 7:00PM central or 8:00 eastern time. It's really worth watching. |
Gayle, I've seen the last 4 episodes of The Midwife. It's so good! Tonight's episode made me cry.. for you and the love you have lost. Oh my, what a show!!
