My son had magnifying glasses. We showed him how to kindle a fire with one. When he was old enough, we also showed his best friend and showed them how to be safe, on the concrete, burning a hole in one leaf. The boys went out front to get something from my car and his friend stopped and started a fire in a leaf pile at the curb about a foot from my car! Thankfully I came tracking them down and snuffed it out immediately. The boy with the stick reminds me so much of my son's friend... :p

When my Brother I and were younger ( much younger ) we'd take a magnifying glass and fry ants with it on the sidewalk. Amazing what kids do w/ their time, LOL.

When it rained, in the country, we used to go worm and salamander hunting. The salamanders we would keep in jars and feed for a day or so, but the worms ended up getting cut in half, and we'd all watch to see if the two ends would crawl away. They never did.
We did snakes too, which promptly died.

Bugs are fun to play with.

lol, so you were always a biologist in the making! Seems like you picked the perfect field to study!

I love salamanders. They're so cute. That was also my groups name when I was a camp counselor.

Aren't salamanders adorable? I love their tiny little feet, and their beautiful tiny, long bodies, big eyes, and the fact that they aren't afraid of people.

We used to turn over rocks to see what was living underneath. After a country rain, cool things come up.

By gosh that little guy is kinda cute. I've never seen that type before.

DianaB 10-31-2007 09:18 AM

That salamander sure doesn't look like any that I've seen around here. Ours are just brown and pretty ugly!!! You don't see them very often either.

katepoet 10-31-2007 09:32 AM

Salamanders, newts, frogs, tadpoles, turtles... give me those creatures to watch any day and I will be content.

lol, how did I miss the rest of this thread! Yorkies are cute, salamanders are cute in a different way. :p I love playing with them.

The camp kids just went NUTS when we would see anything cool while hiking and such. The camp had a biologist (who worked in the kitchen ) and she gave us all ecology lessons so that we would be able to really keep the kids interested and teach them something at the same time. My favorite activity was "stream ecology" which for the smaller groups turned into "how many times can I fall in the water and make it look like an accident" time. lol. The older groups would catch as many things as possible so that we could figure out what they were. We had some interesting little "communities" in our bowls. Once, two crayfish attacked and ate a poor little salamander right in front of the kids! It was the saddest thing... :( Another time, the MIR (minister in residence) caught a baby snake and got bitten... The kids just loved that! Oh the fun of being a camp counselor. lol

judy 11-02-2007 08:13 PM

That sounds like fun Angie.

That salamander is not from around here. I just thought the picture was beautiful.
The ones upstate are NY are orange, but not so exotic.

AngieDoogles 11-03-2007 08:30 AM

Most of the ones here were black or orange. They were so pretty!
