We're expecting puppies!!

I don't think I told you all, but Gidget is expecting puppies the 20th of this month.

We are all excited and can't wait to have puppies in the house again.

I feel VERY guilty though. I've always skipped a heat. I just thought that was best. She just had a litter in June, but I had read so many breeders (mainly show) saying they breed two, skp one. I can say that I will NEVER do that again, even if the consensus is that it is okay. I just feel so bad. She's a great Mom so I know all will be okay, but guilt!! Hard to deal with.

The good thing...since I've felt so guilty, she gets even more attention, special meals and special treats...LOL The other dogs are beginning to get jealous. She is such a good girl.

Janet,

You puppy making machines are really going good. Wish I could get one.
But not in this house. No time for messes to clean up. Congrats to you and the soon to be new mommy. Hope it all goes well.

Tink 01-07-2008 07:51 PM

Oh fun Janet!

I'm being told the same by labradodle breeders. They claim by skipping you're inviting cancers to develop too. So they not only suggest it, they PUSH it!

You know Tink, it really gets me sometimes. I've had dogs ALL my life, even pictures with dogs we had when I was so little I don't even remember them. None of our dogs (then and now) had ever been spayed/neutered and all had died of old age. No death from sickness or accident. But when we had a beagle about 12 years ago, we had him fixed and at the age of 3 died of cancer. I really don't know what to believe, but I sure feel guilty for breeding Gidget again so soon without skipping a heat. Even though I know it's okay, my Vet said it was okay, (he just said to stay on a schedule, either every other or breed two, skip 1) I just don't like feeling like I did something bad to her.

DianaB 01-08-2008 07:36 AM

I'm sure that Gidget doesn't mind one way or another except for the fact that she's loving the extra attention and treats!!!! What's done is done so don't feel guilty. Just go back to the way that you feel more comfortable with. This will be a good time of year to have her scheduled to have puppies in anyway. You were so tied down with puppies during the summer, plus you had TWO litters to deal with. You won't be so overwhelmed with puppies this time. I can't wait for pictures of them!!!! I love your puppy pictures!!!

Thanks Diana. I am going back to the every other heat. I just wouldn't want them feeling pregnant and uncomfortable all the time. I seem to put human emotions on them. Sometimes they act human and I know that at times they know what we're thinking. Just like last night when Gidget was laying over on the doggie bed in the family room. I was sitting on the couch and just said to her that I was sorry and we'd skip a heat next time. That I hoped she wasn't too mad at me. She came and jumped up on the couch wagging her tail and gave me kisses...all on her own.

DianaB 01-08-2008 10:37 AM

Awwwwww, Gidget is a sweetie!!

Aww how sweet! Janet, it sounds like you've made up your mind and besides the most important things are what's safe and healthy for Gidget and what YOU feel is best for her. I think you are doing a great job taking care of her. :)

Can't wait to see puppy pics!!

judy 01-08-2008 12:33 PM

I think she'll be just fine. Now you know what you're comfortable with. I'd love to see belly pix. How is the Daddy doing?

When do you find out how many pups she's going to have?

CONGRATULATIONS GIDGET !!!

Janet 01-08-2008 02:46 PM

I am taking her for x-rays on the 16th at 9:30 AM. I'm really excited to find out out many she's got in there. I haven't taken a pic of her yet, but I'll try to get one here soon. Daddy is fine...just a real cocky little dude...lol

Good luck! How many are you hoping for?

Gina 01-08-2008 03:40 PM

Janet don't feel guilty over it. Like your vet and others have said it will be fine. I can't wait to see the next breed of cuties.....At least we have something to look forward to this winter . :)

Congratulations!

Marilyn 01-08-2008 08:44 PM

Janet, you are a loving and kind mommy!!! Don't feel guilty if the vet says it's okay. The Dog Whisperer says that dogs are all about what is happening right now. So she probably doesn't even realize whether or not you skipped a heat. She will be fine, I'm sure and you are a very responsible breeder to be so concerned about doing the right thing. Huggs!!

Mandy 01-09-2008 02:59 AM

How exciting! Congrats Janet, thats something to look forward to

Janet 01-09-2008 08:23 AM

I really don't like to wish for a certain amount, just whatever is healthy for Gidget and the puppies. She is such a good girl, it's hard not to feel a little guilty when she looks at you with those eyes that seem to be saying...'who's idea was this?'

I'll get everything set up for her this weekend so she'll know where she can go. I know it's a little early, but I just like being ready...you all should know that about me by now....LOL

Tink 01-09-2008 08:44 AM

Janet, I am hoping Canada will wait at least another month to come back into heat so I can breed her again without skipping a heat. I don't want pups while the weather is still bitterly cold or there's a lot of deep snow so April would be the earliest I'd want her to deliver.

I wouldn't even consider breeding her again this soon if she seemed to be brought down any from the last litter yet. But considering she never got thin or run down and had no trouble getting back to her old fat and shiny self, I feel we're good to go.

I'm sure that you, like I, give your females special goodies and care to keep them at optimum health through out... so that really makes a difference too in my mind. I've seen a lot of nursing females that look just awful! I can't imagine either of us would let that happen or breed that dog again if there was even a hint of it!

I really don't know why you should have to feel guilty for allowing her to do what her instincts tell her to do so long as you can see that she and the pups are healthy and fit.

Janet 01-09-2008 08:54 AM

She is very healthy. I know I shouldn't feel guilty, I really do. She's a great Mom, getting all kinds of extra attention. She didn't 'go down' any with her last pregnancy. She's loving her scrambled egg breakfast and chicken and rice supper so she's doing good. I just give her a little of each to eat with her puppy food. She lets me know when she's ready for it too...so funny!

April shouldn't be too cold I wouldn't think. You know me...I'm hoping for an early spring.

Marilyn, that is so true. She doesn't remember that she didn't skip a heat. I know you are treating her well, and that's probably what she's thinking about. "When's Mommy going to give me my next special treat?"

Tell Joey Max and Gracie are very proud of his studliness and they send Gidget a big Yorkie kiss!

judy 01-14-2008 04:47 PM

How's our little Mama? I hope she's feeling good - she's due soon!

I can't wait to see yorkie puppy pictures!

:excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited:

Aw Judy, thanks for asking. I take her Wednesday (16th) to have x-rays taken and then she's due the 20th. I have her area set up in my bedroom and shaved her belly and back end down a bit. So sometime next weekend we should have some babies.
