i haven't been able to figure out how to NOT subscribe to a thread... or how to unsubscribe?

Go to Uxer CP and on the left hand side go down to list subscription. You will be able to figure it out from there.

Also, if you post and do not want to subscripe, after writing your post go down to the box below "Additional Options and click on notification type.

Can't you also change your profile to not send e-mail notifications at all? I haven't checked my e-mail associated with my registration since activating my account. My mailbox may be overflowing, too!!
