I would too if I had someone to fix them up for me!  In NYC, if you have to park on the street, I think it's pointless to have a new car.  The bumpers are scratched up very soon because everybody squeezes into parking spots. There's also how many times when you park in a lot and come out to find a scrape. a dent, a ding, etc.
I've always bought my cars the same way.  I decide how much I can spend, buy the Consumers Car Book, find their Best Buys for that amount, and then go look for it.  I
always drive a stick and my last 3 cars have been sports cars.  I have a mechanic I really trust and have the car checked out by him before I buy it.  It's a good system.
