I never heard of putting the children's names on the back of the headstone. That seems like a strange custom. My parent's headstone is all one piece for both of them. Tradition around here is to buy the stone after the first spouse dies and engrave both names with the death date blank on the living person's side. My father passed away 5 years before my mother, but she left her side of the stone completely blank. She did not want her name on a stone laying out in a cemetary until she was dead, so after she passed away, I had her information engraved. Between their names is a spot with their wedding aniversary date and two overlapped wedding rings. I think that is really nice, but so glad may name is not on it anywhere.
