You or They Pay!

Okay, I saw a few posts where the person is paying their student loan and another where the parent is wanting to pay off student loans.

So the big question is.......

Who should pay for the child's college education? The child (student) or the parents and ......why?

Don't know why I asked that question, cause I just don't know how to answer it. I suppose if I had money out the whazoo, I would pay for my child's college education...but since I don't.....he'll have to if he wants to go.

I can't imagine being a young person and starting life off with thousands of dollars in debt after a college education.

My parents have money out the wazoo & it was important to my dad that he pay for our schooling. He had to work his ass off to get through school & he didn't want that for us. It was more important that we go to college. My husband's family didn't have money, but they all worked together so that Jeremy good go to a very expensive private school in Indiana (very prestigous). I feel that the family needs to work out what works for them. If the child wants to go, the parents should help as much as they can.

I would help, but my son would also have to show me that he's "working" for it!

I see a lot of kids here work as they go along to pay or help pay for their education.

It must be hard to make a start in life with huge education bills to pay off!! I can't imagine having to do that.

What we are doing is the kids pay 1/2 and we pay 1/2.
But it still is alot of money. That we don't have. But what can
you do. I never went to college and I want my kids to have a better life than what I have had.

I know how fortunate I am to have had my parents pay for college (everything, boarding, books, tutition, and spending money) and they are not rich by any standards. My dad was even layed off while I was (I still am) in college.
I think parents should pay. It's suggested that you start a college savings fund for your child as soon as you find out she/he's on the way. Even if you don't start that early, there is time to save, and as a parent I think it is super important that you instill in your child how important college and pay for it.

I wish that we had the money to pay for my daughter's college. She's had to take out student loans to help her out. I pay for her books and try to help her out when she needs it. I think that by making her loans her responsibility that she has taken her schooling seriously. No partying or messing around for her, because she's paying for it. She's determined to graduate and get a good job so that she can get her loans all paid off. I'm very proud of her. She will graduate this spring with a bachelors in biology. She's applying to pharmacy and physician's assistant schools.
