Any Nurses? 20,000 WBC
Just wondering if there are any nurses on here. My white blood count came back 20,000 and my neutriphils were also high out of range. I got very sick early Monday morning. Came out of no where. Was at my MD and then at the ER on IV. Was told that even with a virus blood count should not be this high. I'm very nervous. I was under the care of an oncologist for years for a high white count. He diagnosed me hyper cellular or pre leukemia then chronic. I've been pretty stable for a couple of years now. Just wondering if any of our nurses have any input on this. I have an appt. Wed. with the oncologist again and this Friday with an MD. I switched today the MD I had for 14 years. When I was sick on Monday, he treated me with accupuncture and then I ended up in ER. and, Six years ago he missed the Leukemia so I thought it was time for a change and am now going to one of the other doctors in the group that I've known for years. Any input would be appreciated. Just kind of scared and nervous. And, still feeling sick and weak. Thanks. Elaine

Elaine, I'm so sorry you are sick. Gayle is our resident nurse, and she's on vacation. I think it's a good idea that you changed doctors, since that one missed what he did. I know you must be very afraid..I hear it in you post. Try to take it easy until your next appointment, and don't hesitate to go to the ER if you feel worse. Please keep us informed. May God bless and comfort you! Betsi

Elaine...I'm glad you're here, but sorry to read you're not feeling well. Betsi is right....Gayle isn't here right now and she is our own wonderful nurse. You can call your Dr. and they will tell you what the counts mean if you think it will help you not worry as much.
I too can tell in your post that you're worried. I will keep you in my prayers Elaine.

Elaine, I'm so sorry to hear that you're not feeling well. It sounds like something that definitely needs to be looked at by a doctor so I'm glad that you have appointments. I'll say a prayer. Let us know how you're doing. Hugs!

Swine
Went back to my MD this morning and the second set of labs that were done Friday, came back fine. My whites are back where they should be, so I don't have to follow up with the oncologist this Wed. I'm really greatful. You know when I first woke up sick I swore it was the flu. I was really really bad for about four solid days. The ER took a nose swab to test for Swine Flu and it came back negative. Now, I was told this morning by my MD that he believes what I had was Swine Flu. He said that the swab test is like a throat culture and if done too early will give a false negative. Ya think the hospital should have known this. I asked about Tamiflu for my husband and two sons but he suggested to do the wait and see since it's been almost 10 days. The incubation period is 1-3 days prior to symptoms and 7-10 days contagious from onset of symptoms. I really hope my family does not get this. It was the worse thing I've ever gotten. Even the Leukemia did not make me as sick as this flu did. Anyway, thanks for all your thoughts. You guys are the greatest. Elaine
