I've made patterns smaller by using my copy machine and they turned out ok. Just make sure that you reduce all of the pattern pieces by the same percentage.

how do you know you have it small enough? Do you just try it on them?

I had the same problem with my small guy. I reduced the pattern a couple of times, then cut one out of scrap fabric just to see if it fit. That's what I'd do.

When I did it I cut a pattern out of paper and held it up to Reuger to figure out if I made the right size. You have to remember that you will have seam allowances so you really want it to be a little bigger.
