I am so sorry to see this Kathy. I know it is hard to not be there when they really need us, but I think if your mom had the choice she would not have wanted you there. She would want you to always remember her the way she was and would not have wanted you to see her as she left this world. There is little we can do in that moment and I am sure that she knew how much you love her. Think back to the last time you got to "hang out" with her or talk with her about something important. I think that will make you smile through the tears and just know that she knows how loved she is and that you will carry her memory on in your heart.
