I loved seeing your pictures, Janet!! You have some really beautiful buildings!! Your church was wonderful! The mural was awesome!!! I forgot that we have a couple of small murals in our town. Maybe I'll take some pictures of them too! Thanks so much for sharing! One of these days I'm going to see them in person!!!!

Gayle the other field is planted with soybeans. That's pretty much the crop in Indiana and our county...corn and soybeans.

I thought it was soybeans, but didn't want to sound stupid if it wasn't I grew up on the farm, but we didn't have soybeans, just wheat, corn, cotton, and feed that we called maize.

Maize is also called milo or grain sorghum. My husband grows this stuff. It's used for feed for pigs and chickens. Is this it?

Yep, that's it - what my granddad called maize. I'm sure milo is the new and improved plant - this was back in the 50's (wow, I'm old!).

Back then we didn't have a combine and couldn't afford to hire the feed cut by a combine. I remember the men in the field with sickles, cutting down the stalks at the ground and then they placed them with the heads up in a shock form, bottoms of the stalks out and heads together propping it up - here's a link to a picture of a corn shock http://family.webshots.com/photo/102...1040KnxlTRAoZW I couldn't post the picture.

Then they would come back and cut the heads off - and I don't remember what they did with them then - took them off to market I guess because they disappeared!

Goodness, that was a long time ago.

Janet, i loved seeing all the pictures! It's so different to what we are use to here, the buildings are gorgeous, i love the park, and adore your mom's home, it looks like a cosy cottage type of home, it really is lovely!

Yes, Mandy, it's a very small 2 bedroom and she and my father raised us four kids in it. Very crowded..indeed. I would love to see pictures of your town Mandy and the rest of you all too.

++

We raise corn, soybeans, wheat, and milo (like what's pictured). We don't have any cattle because we don't hardly have any pasture and we enjoy having the winter off. Cattle are a lot of work and you have to feed them every day so we're strictly grain farmers. In our area we also have some sunflowers grown and they are SO pretty when they're blooming. If you go south a little ways you'll find a little bit of cotton but not much. Farmers also put up hay around here and we have a little bit from a meadow near the house.

Right now we're waiting to dry up from all of the rain then Glen will be busy, busy with harvest. We have corn that's more than ready to pick and a little while before the other crops are ready. Wheat is cut in the spring so that's already taken care of. It's a very different life than having an 8-5 job.
