That is a great gift idea. My aunt gave me a carton of canned goods when I got my first apartment. I really appreciated that.
My first MIL used to make prepackaged meals for me and Jessica. Every month we would go to visit her and she would pack up 10 - 12 frozen meals. It was so thoughtful because I had very little money, and took a lot of time and thought.
