Tradition around here is to buy the stone after the first spouse dies and engrave both names with the death date blank on the living person's side. My father passed away 5 years before my mother, but she left her side of the stone completely blank. She did not want her name on a stone laying out in a cemetary until she was dead, so after she passed away, I had her information engraved. Between their names is a spot with their wedding aniversary date and two overlapped wedding rings. I think that is really nice, but so glad may name is not on it anywhere.

I think it's something they use to do a while ago, but is making a comeback here. More money for the headstone people. My father has his headstone in the ground flat. (It's so they don't have to mow around a bunch of standing headstones), so there is no way to put something on the back. Mom's name is on it too, but no date. Our parents are buried in different cemetaries, so I told my hubby he could lie with his, I'll lie with mine....till death do us part...LOL
